Which Awards Qualify Teams at VEX V5 Events

A Qualifying Award is an award that qualifies a team for a higher competition pathway, such as a Championship Event or the VEX Robotics World Championship. Which awards those are is not the same at every event: your event receives a set number of qualifying spots, and that number determines how far down the order of awards they reach. This article gives the full list for every total for VEX V5 events, up to a maximum of 16.

Note: If your event has more than 16 qualifying spots, the extra spots are filled after the event from your event's Robot Skills rankings, starting with the highest-ranked team that has not already qualified.

This article is written for Event Partners preparing to post an event, and for teams checking which awards would advance them.

Definitions of the terms used here are maintained in the central glossary.

For the criteria an event must meet to offer advancement through qualifying spots, see Event Qualifying Criteria. For what each award recognizes, see Award Descriptions. For how judging determines the awards you can offer, see Planning Judging and Awards for an Event.

How Qualifying Awards Are Determined

Your event's number of qualifying spots is determined by your Program Support Team, and appears on your event's page at events.vex.com. Advancement opportunities are distributed down a fixed order of awards and finishes, from the top, until they run out. The order is the same at every event, so your total is the only thing you need to look up.

Alliance finishes qualify more than one team. Tournament Champions and Tournament Finalists are two teams each, and Tournament Semifinalists are four. An Alliance is never split, which is why some totals do not appear below.

Awards That Are Never Qualifying Awards

These four awards do not qualify a team at any event size:

  • Judges Award
  • Inspire Award
  • Energy Award
  • Sportsmanship Award

The Judges Award is required at any Qualifying Event that offers judging, so it will be in your lineup whether or not it qualifies a team.
